Leabank’s Cycling Success for Cancer Focus NI

12th March 2025
From Ballycastle to Dublin... then to Cork!
From 4th-6th March, staff and relatives from Leabank Nursing Home in Ballycastle pedalled their way to success, raising £620.20 for Cancer Focus Northern Ireland through a virtual cycle!
Initially aiming to cycle from Ballycastle to Dublin, the team smashed their target and ended up covering 321 miles, reaching Cork!
Leabank is home to over 50 residents and is dedicated to providing excellent care. Among the participants was 86-year-old Maureen, who still works 20 hours a week as a dedicated Care Assistant at Leabank, proving that age is no barrier to giving back to the community.
Activities Therapist and event organiser, Therese, shared her personal motivation for taking part in the challenge:
“I have spent 11 years on and off a walking stick dealing with osteoarthritis. After multiple treatments, I can now move more freely, and I love challenging myself to see what my body can do. Three surgeries later, I’m encouraging my colleagues to join in. Exercise isn’t just about fitness—it’s proven to boost mood, wellbeing, and bring people together, which is exactly what this event was all about! It was great to involve our team in a different way while raising funds for a vital cancer charity.”
The team at the Ballycastle care home extend heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated and donated, and to Sheskburn Recreation Centre for providing the bicycle. This event is a testament to the power of community spirit, demonstrating how small actions can make a big impact in supporting essential cancer services across Northern Ireland.
Well done to everyone at Leabank!
