Ratheane’s Christmas Poem

7th December 2017

A magical Christmas Poem from Evelyn Joyce, Activities Therapist at Ratheane Nursing Home.

Christmas comes but once a year and some would say thank god,

With all the getting and spending – of cash you would need a wad.

But the best thing about Christmas cannot be bought or sold,

It is in the precious gift of joy found in a story very old.

For joy at Christmas in Ratheane the residents will tell,

Comes not from the cooking, although it makes a lovely smell.

It doesn’t come from buying things in the market stall,

Even though our sitting room becomes a shopping mall.

It doesn’t come from choirs carolling, although the children voices ring,

And their lovely little faces are smiling as they sing.

It doesn’t come at the party, though Santa comes to call,

Bringing presents from the Macklin family to everyone and all.

For joy is something different, it can come in the dead of the night,

When the twinkle of a little star can fill our hearts with light.

Joy comes to us from the little child who in the manger lay,

And the joy of what god gives us throughout the year can stay.

And that’s the joy I wish for you this happy Christmas season

The joy that comes from life alone for love is the reason.
